Fewer than a fifth of our 25 departments are fully supported. This means that for every endeavor – big and small – departments have to request funding from the College operating budget, whose finite pool cannot cover all worthy needs. As a result, innovative ideas and new academic efforts are shelved or eliminated from consideration. In some cases, it means limiting student exposure to area-specific expertise or experiences.
Academic Department Discretionary Funds are designed to propel the creativity and ingenuity of our teacher-scholars, providing them with the resources necessary to deliver the personal experiences that augment a challenging curriculum, while enhancing the value of relationships among current students, members of the department, alumni and the broader community. Departmental support means a higher-quality classroom and a more complete student experience.
